Fear and anxiety are basic emotions embedded in us for self-preservation. They mobilize us to seek better coping strategies and increase our adaptability to the environment and the changes occurring within it. The world of children, much like that of adults, is filled with problems, unfulfilled dreams, stress, and exhaustion. Regardless of their age, children experience stress and problems just as adults do, but in a slightly different way. The number of children showing signs of stress, emotional problems, and neurosis is increasing today. An indirect sign of this is the use of psychotropic substances. According to a study conducted between 2005 and 2012 in the USA and Europe and published in The European Journal Of Neuropsychopharmacology, the use of such medications increased by 40% over 7 years.
Childhood neuroses are functional disorders of the nervous system of a reversible nature. They occur with high frequency and account for about 30% of children examined by a pediatric neurologist. They are caused by exhaustion or stress (severe, one-time, or through continuous repetitive impacts on the nervous system). The still immature nervous system of children is very susceptible to external psychological influence; therefore, neurosis most often manifests for the first time in childhood. Children are very vulnerable, and logically, any negative event can leave an imprint with consequences.
Neurotic disorders are common in children and can occur at any age, in most cases due to exposure to acute or chronic stress or certain personality traits. Generally, they arise as a result of some nervous tension in children. They manifest under prolonged factors exhausting the nervous system (mental, academic, or psychological fatigue), especially in combination with another illness.
Anxiety manifests differently in different periods of a child’s development. Children with anxiety disorders are generally more insecure, depressed, isolated, and exhibit avoidant behavior. They may refuse to attend kindergarten or school. They are often irritable, with impaired concentration (especially in the afternoon, evening, or at the end of the school day), short-tempered, tearful, and have disturbed sleep with sleep-talking or nightmares. A characteristic of childhood is the close connection between mental and physical processes. Due to difficulties in expressing their emotional states in words, anxiety in children is often expressed through physical complaints (headaches, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, sweating) or through aggressive behavior. Clinically, neurosis manifests as depression, indecision, lethargy, and apathy. Complaints such as tension headaches, dizziness or “internal vertigo,” and lack of appetite are observed. Autonomic dysfunction (sweating, increased dermographism, numbness in parts of the body) is also seen. Tics or stuttering may appear. Often in children, manifestations of neurosis can be accompanied by gastrointestinal problems such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps.
The link between stress and the immune system has been proven. Stress weakens the functions of innate and acquired immunity. When the stress mechanism is activated frequently or for long periods, it can significantly disrupt the balance of several systems in the body. Additionally, it reduces the ability to fight bacteria and viruses and hinders the formation of protective antibodies. It has been proven that children under the influence of stress are twice as likely to fall ill with colds.
Anxiety becomes pathological when it is more intense, more prolonged, and affects our functioning. It is advisable for parents to seek help if the child’s fears and worries become excessive and they are unable to cope with daily activities. Timely diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders in childhood serve as prevention for anxiety and depressive disorders in adulthood.
